ACL Week – Southern Africa Session

Online

14th April 2021

The inaugural Africa Construction Law (ACL) Week “Demystifying Construction Law in Africa” ran virtually from 9-15 April 2021. Robert Gaitskell QC and Abdul Jinadu were pleased to be part of the Southern Africa sub-regional session, which took place on 14 April. This session was split into two panels with the first addressing the transactional issues and the second panel (including Robert as moderator and Abdul as expert panellist) addressing claims and dispute resolution.

Across the two sessions that afternoon the panel of expert speakers explored the trends, opportunities and challenges within the construction markets in the region. The panel considered the following:

– Project development: trends and issues in project development, financing and procurement.
– Regional overview of contract and project management practices, key development in the last decade and where to?
– Trends and issues in the use of mediation and adjudication to resolve disputes. Regional overview and discussion.
– Practical focus: written and oral advocacy in construction arbitration – what happens on the ground? Regional overview and comparative analysis.
