It is with deep sadness that Keating Chambers mark the sudden death of our friend and former colleague, Paul Darling OBE KC.
Paul was called in 1983 and joined Chambers in 1985. He soon developed an enviable construction law practice, resulting in him taking silk as early as 1999, from which time his successful practice continued. He was a shrewd advocate. Teased for finding the key to a case somewhere near the top of the hearing bundle, rather than buried deep within it, there was no doubting his instinct and it led to many of his forensic successes. Amongst them was Temloc v Errill Properties Ltd (1988), which he was famed for shoe-horning into his submissions wherever he plausibly could. In another Official Referee’s case before Judge Newey QC he simultaneously served as advocate, witness and court usher.
Whilst in Chambers, Paul generously gave of his time on committees, in helping junior members starting out and in finding more senior external recruits to join us. In 2010, he became our head of chambers, almost by proclamation, about which he felt immensely proud. He continued to serve until 2015, during which time he developed our constitution and introduced the role of CEO. Paul was also a keen contributor to Keating on Construction Contracts, appreciating its long-standing significance to Chambers as a whole.
Paul’s success within and contribution to Chambers is well-known. He was a formidable presence in any room and will be sorely missed. We send our deepest condolences to Camilla, Ian and the rest of his family and friends.
